Paul Ambrose Award for Leadership Among Resident Physicians

Paul Ambrose, MD, was serving as a senior clinical advisor in the Office of the Surgeon General at the time of his death during the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001. Dr. Ambrose worked toward providing health care and immunizations for the poor and dedicated his brief career to service in public health and the need for physician leadership in health policy. His dedication and commitment to medicine in the public health arena will continue through this leadership award in his honor.

Through the Paul Ambrose Award for Leadership Among Resident Physicians, the AMA-RFS strives to recognize and encourage excellence in leadership development within public health by resident/fellow physicians and to stimulate similar efforts by other physicians in training.

This annual award will be highly publicized and presented at the AMA-RFS Annual Meeting in June and will underscore to the Federation of Medicine and the medical community the significant public health accomplishments attained by residents who give of themselves to achieve and advance the well-being of others.

General criteria

A Nomination Committee comprised of resident physician leaders and graduate medicine administrators will select the award recipients based on the following:

• Public health activities implemented by an individual resident/fellow will be considered.
• Public health activity must have occurred during the year prior to application, or the individual must have demonstrated a commitment to significant public health service over a lifetime.
• Positive effect on a given community, training institution or population.
• Level of involvement and leadership demonstrated.
• Thoroughness of program/project planning and implementation.
• Completeness/comprehensiveness of information submitted.
• Self-nominations are encouraged.
• Any organization or individual may submit more than one nomination.
• The nominee(s) must be AMA members.
• The award(s) will be presented during the AMA-RFS Annual Meeting in June in Chicago, Ill.;
• All entries must be received by the deadline. The winner will be notified by early May.
