The 2008 Annual Research Poster Symposium was held at the AMA-RFS Interim Assembly Meeting in Orlando, Florida jointly with the AMA Medical Student Section in association with Pfizer Medical Humanities Initiative, Inc. The symposium featured a panel discussion on "Careers in Medical Research" with panelists Cathryn M. Clary, MD, MBA, Susan Dorr Goold, MD, MHSA, MA and Haytham Kaafarani, MD, MPH.

2008 Submission Guidelines

• Deadline for abstract submission is:  Sept. 18, 2008 no later than 5:00 p.m. CDT.
• All must be original works of individuals actively engaged in residency or fellowship training.
• Entry is free as an AMA member benefit.
• Non-members: $45 membership fee.  Visit www.ama-assn.org/go/join to join online or call (800) 262-3211.
• Authors of entries accepted for the Research Symposium must be willing to attend the meeting and be present to discuss their submission.
• All abstract submissions must be via email: rfs@ama-assn.org. If you have any questions, email or call (800) 262-3211, ext. 4978.
• All submitters will be notified via e-mail regarding acceptance or rejection of their abstract by Oct. 2.

Abstract Categories
Submissions may be entered into one of  four categories:

1. Basic Science - implies the use of scientific method to derive original data in the laboratory.  Entrants are expected to highlight pertinent aspects of scientific background, medical context, as well as techniques used to derive the data.
   
2. Clinical Medicine - connotes use of scientific method to derive original data in the patient care setting.  Abstracts should identify pertinent aspects of pathophysiology, clinical relevance, and techniques used to derive the data.
   
3. Health Policy and Medical Education - refers broadly to any original systematic, scientific analysis of, or model for, health care education or health care policy.
   
4. Clinical Vignette - involve the presentation of one or more patient encounters that illuminate unique observations of a known disease, or that describe a novel disease process.  These are expected to include clinical patient information – such as history, physical exam, clinical data – as well as an analysis of how such observations might contribute to existing medical or scientific knowledge.

Abstract Criteria

• All Abstract Submissions should be submitted as an email attachment in MS WORD.  The submissions must begin with:
  1. Title
  2. Authors names
  3. Institution Affiliations
• Abstracts will be a maximum of 400 words.  Title, Authors, and Institution Affiliations are not included in word count.  Please do not include captions from photos or graphs in abstract text.  Please also submit abstracts double-spaced, and written in 12 point Arial font.
• All research abstracts should consist of four paragraphs, with the headings: Background (the hypothesis of the study must be clearly stated), Methods, Results and Conclusions.  A fifth paragraph, headed Clinical Relevance, should be addded for basic science articles.
• Graphs, figures and photos should not be included in the submitted abstract, but should be incorporated into the poster for presentation at the meeting.
• Authors will be responsible for submitting their abstract to the appropriate category (see abstract categories).
• Entries may have been published in abstract form elsewhere, but entries may not be taken from previously published papers.  (Authors should also be aware that acceptance at this meeting may preclude an abstract’s candidacy for submission elsewhere.)
• At the end of the abstract, please include the category of the abstract, contact information of the entrant including name, title (resident/fellow, specialty, year, name of institution), address, telephone, and e-mail.
• All previous abstract submissions to this Symposium will not be considered.
• Authors may submit a maximum of two entries for the 2008 Interim Meeting.

Abstracts that do not meet the requirements stated above will be automatically rejected. Accepted abstracts must be presented in poster format during the Interim Meeting.

Poster Presentation

• Top abstracts from each of the four categories will be selected by a Poster Symposium Committee for presentation at the AMA Residents & Fellows Interim Meeting in Orlando, Florida on Nov. 7, 2008.
• Invited posters are to be prepared in advance.  Bulletin board and pins will be provided.
• Posters should include Title, Authors, Institution Affiliations, and a detailed description of methods and results.  Graphs, tables and photos are welcome on posters.
• Poster text must be in 16 point font or greater.
• No word count is assigned to Poster text, but please limit narrative.
• Posters will be displayed on bulletin boards in a gallery area, where entrants will be present to discuss their submissions, on Friday, Nov. 7, 2008 at the Interim Meeting of the American Medical Association - Resident and Fellow Section in Orlando, Florida.
• All costs of poster creation will be the responsibility of the entrants.
• During a designated display time, a panel of judges will visit and examine each presentation.  Authors must be available for questions during this time.

Judging and Awards

• A panel of Poster Competition judges will be selected by the AMA-RFS Governing Council prior to the meeting.
• There will be awards given in each category. The overall grand prize winner receives a plaque, a cash prize, and trip to the 2009 Annual Meeting in Chicago.
• The winners will be selected during the poster symposium and will be recognized before the RFS Assembly on the morning of Sat., Nov. 8.
