2009 AMA Foundation Excellence in Medicine Awards

Each year the AMA Foundation honors a select group of physicians, residents, fellows and medical students who exemplify the medical profession’s highest values: commitment to service, community involvement, altruism and leadership in the medical profession. The AMA Foundation is currently accepting nominations and applications for the 2009 Excellence in Medicine Awards, which include:

  • The Pride in the Profession Award
  • The Dr. Nathan Davis International Award in Medicine
  • The Jack B. McConnell, MD Award for Excellence in Volunteerism
  • The Leadership Awards

All awardees receive airfare and accommodations to the Excellence in Medicine Awards dinner and ceremony on March 9, 2009 and the AMA National Advocacy Conference, March 10 & 11, 2009 in Washington D.C.

The Pride in the Profession Award recognizes the contributions of exemplary domestic physicians who work in underserved areas or sacrifice their time for volunteer or public service efforts in the United States.

The Dr. Nathan Davis International Award in Medicine is presented to domestic physicians for outstanding international service. This award recognizes physicians who has dramatically improved medical practice, medical education or medical research for an international patient population.

The Jack B. McConnell MD Award for Excellence in Volunteerism recognizes the work of domestic senior physicians (55 years or older) who provides treatment to U.S. patients who lack access to health care.

Up to six awards will be given to physicians across the above three categories. A $1000 grant will be awarded to the organization with which the recipient works.

Nominate a physician today for the three awards listed above. Nominations are due on or before Dec. 3, 2008.

The Leadership Awards are presented to 15 medical students, 10 residents/fellows and five early-career physicians in recognition of strong, nonclinical leadership skills in advocacy, community service, public health and/or education. The awards provide leadership development training to further strengthen their efforts toward advancing health care in America. Download the application form for detailed eligibility requirements. The Leadership Awards are a self nomination process, but a recommendation form is required.

We recommend that you use a courier service such as FedEx, UPS, or DHL, rather than USPS First Class, to better ensure a timely arrival.
