AMA-MAC Interim Meeting events
Please plan to join the AMA-MAC at its caucus on Friday, November 7, from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. in Crystal N/P of the Marriott Orlando World Center. Caucus highlights include:
On Saturday, November 8, 12noon -1pm (Grand Ballroom 7A), Donald Palmisano, MD, JD, who recently wrote a book entitled "On Leadership" will be the keynote speaker on the topic of leadership. Lunch is available for $39. Attendees may also attend the program without purchasing lunch.
On Monday, November 10, 8 am - 9am (Grand Ballroom 8B), the AMA Institute for Ethics, the AMA-MAC, and the Commission to End Health Care Disparities will be co-sponsoring an educational session entitlted "African-American Physicians and Organized Medicine."
MAC Subcommittees
The MAC is currently is signing up participants for its subcommittees. These subcommittees will work closely with the Governing Council to support policy and activities that support the objectives of the AMA-MAC.
Hispanic Political Leadership Seminar held in October
The AMA-MAC sponsored a Hispanic Political Leadership Seminar in early October 2008. The Hispanic Physician Outreach Initiative (HPOI) fund supported a select number of physicians to attend this event.
AMA-MAC Disposition of Actions from the 2008 AMA Annual meeting
The AMA House of Delegates (HOD) convened June 14 -17 in Chicago for its 2008 Annual Meeting. The AMA Minority Affairs Consortium (MAC) Governing Council took an active role in this process. It authored five resolutions (Res. 007, 008, 509, 510, and 511) as well as testified on many key issues before the HOD. View the AMA disposition of actions (PDF, 104KB). Highlights from AMA-MAC activities at the AMA Annual Meeting
The AMA-MAC focused on itmes of interest before the HOD, including its resolutions on health disparities in cancer, maternal mortality among minority women, and a proposal to rename the MAC as an AMA section in reflection of its existing voting status in the HOD.
The MAC was pleased to present the winners of its 2008 AMA Foundation Minority Scholars Award program, supported by the Pfizer Medical Humanities Initiative. Congratulations to Keri Allen, La Shawna Clark, Jose Figueroa, Nevine Hanna, Marcus Iwane, Marcus Jennings, Rigoberto Ramirez, Martina Sanders-Spight, April Singleton, Justin Taylor, Elizabeth Alm, and Sarah Lewis.
The MAC Educational Program drew an enthusiastic audience to hear presentations on mental health disparities in minority communities by Patrice Harris, MD, as well as Antonio Delgado, MD, National Hispanic Medical Association, and Adrian Begay, MD, Association of American Indian Physicians.
Finally, the MAC Governing Council held its business meeting at which its new leadership was elected, Ada Stewart, MD, as the MAC Chair and Shanda Lohse, MD, as Vice-Chair.
Highlights from the AMA-MAC Interim Meeting
Physicians and medical students who participated in the Doctors Back to School (DBTS) program were welcomed with open arms by the students at Mililani Middle School, located just outside of Waikiki, Hawaii. The DBTS program is designed to help inspire minority children to pursue careers in medicine. The AMA-MAC Caucus featured presentations by AMA President Ronald M. Davis, MD, and National Medical Association Past President Sandra Gadson, MD, co-chairs of the Commission to End Health Care Disparities about its initiatives and to engage physicians in its efforts. Drs. Davis and Gadson are co-chairs of the Commission, which now includes more than 50 organizations. They highlighted several new resources, including the Educating Physicians on Controversies in Health video series and several workshop programs designed to create awareness of this issue within the medical community. The caucus also focused on resolutions of interest to be considered by the AMA House of Delegates, announcements about upcoming governing council elections and a call for applications for the 2008 Minority Scholars Awards. The AMA-MAC also welcomed National Medical Association President Nelson Adams III, MD, to his first AMA meeting.
