Michael Stern

Michael Stern was elected to the AMA Foundation Board of Directors in January 2001. The AMA Foundation Board recently decided to extend its membership to individuals outside the AMA – Mr. Stern was among the first such non-physicians chosen to serve on the Board.

As a writer, philanthropist and respected national and community leader, Mr. Stern brings a valuable perspective to the AMA Foundation as someone who understands the intricacies of the health care community and combines this experience with a long history of working in the private sector.

Mr. Stern is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Fisher Center for Alzheimer’s Research Foundation. He is also a trustee of the Intrepid Museum Foundation and the Fisher House Foundation as well as editor and publisher of the Fisher House Magazine.  He is also Chairman and CEO of the Michael Stern Parkinson Research Foundation whose Medical Director won the 2000 Nobel Prize.  He has recently joined the board of the National Institutes of Health’s PubMed.

Mr. Stern received a Bachelor of Science degree at Syracuse University where he majored in Journalism. He has had an impressive career as a war and foreign correspondent. His story on the Memphis Belle has served as the basis for motion pictures and was selected as one of the 100 best stories of World War II. His story “Nuts,” written on the European front, has served as a basis for historians writing about the Battle of the Bulge. His books include: Into the Jaws of Death; The White Ticket; Flight From Terror; Farouk; No Innocence Abroad; and an autobiography, An American in Rome. He has contributed to numerous American, Italian, and other publications around the world.  Mr. Stern has lectured at the Newhouse School of Communications at Syracuse University and has made countless guest appearances on radio and television. He has produced five feature motion pictures.

Mr. Stern has been instrumental in generating substantial support for the Intrepid Museum, the Fisher House program and many other initiatives. Among them is the CAMP program, located at Lackland Air Force Base.

Mr. Stern was married to the former Estelle Goldstein, now deceased, and has two children, Michael Jr. and Margaret.
