About the WPC Governing Council

The WPC is an AMA special interest group focused on increasing the involvement of women physicians and medical students, and strengthening their collective advocacy voice on women in medicine professional issues and women’s health.

The activities of the WPC are guided by an eight-member Governing Council which includes four At-Large members who are elected by the WPC membership from nominations through an open nomination process.  The remaining four positions are designated for a representative each from the American Medical Women’s Association and the AMA Medical Student Section, Resident and Fellow Section, and Young Physician Section.  These members are elected by the WPC membership from nominations provided by those respective groups.

All AMA-WPC members are eligible to vote.  WPC membership is comprised of all female AMA members and male AMA members who have “opted in” to the WPC.

WPC goals and objectives

  • Provide a dedicated forum for networking, mentoring, advocacy, and leadership development.
  • Advance advocacy and raise awareness about sex/gender-based medicine.
  • Identify/address professional issues affecting women in the profession.
  • Increase female membership, participation, and leadership in the AMA.
  • Provide advice and counsel to the AMA Board of Trustees and Councils on issues of special interest to women in the medical profession.
