2007 MSS Region 5 Meeting
"Your Future in Medicine"

The theme of this meeting will be centered on the future of medicine, the role the student will eventually assume as physician and leader, and tips for future success. The keynote speaker will be Richard Gunderman, MD, and his topic is "The Future of Medicine: What Will it Take to Excel as a Physician?" He is on the radiology faculty at IU and has a book that was recently reviewed in JAMA. A member of the Lilly Co. Research and Development team will give a short presentation on process of developing new drugs from concept to FDA approval. There will also be a workshop on interview skills and various guidelines for professional attire and behavior as well as the AMA's plan for reform. In addition to these presentations, there will scheduled time for Region V business and discussion. A member of the Governing Council will join us to for a presentation and participation in the meeting events.

Activities will begin Friday evening with the keynote speaker, residency fair, and a social event. At 9AM Saturday morning, we will commence with our other speakers, break for lunch, and then have workshops in the afternoon.


2006 MSS Region 5 Meeting
"Dr. Know"

The main focus of our meeting will be the medical aspect of dealing with disasters, whether they are natural, war, or terror attacks. To this end, we have arranged for speakers with experiences with these topics. Dr. Colin Kaide from OSU will be giving a lecture on ballistics and trauma. Chris DeRienzo, the AMA Trustee-Elect from the MSS, will be speaking on his experiences as a medical student helping out with Hurricane Katrina. Dr. Richard Nelson, an OSU ER physician, will be conducting a “how to triage” workshop. Additionally, OSU’s AMA Chapter has put together committees exploring other workshop possibilities, with possible topics including international health, a community service project, bioterrorism, and physician self defense from aggressive patients. Ben Galper, the MSS Chair-Elect, will be providing a policy update and letting attendees know what they can do become more active. We will also have a residency fair.

Activities will begin Friday evening with the residency fair, an opening speaker, and a social event. At 9AM Saturday morning, we will commence with our other speakers, break for lunch, and then have workshops in the afternoon. An optional social event will be held that evening.
