AMA-WPC Physician Mentor Recognition Program nominations wanted 
Nominations are currently being accepted for the second annual AMA-WPC Physician Mentor Recognition Program has begun. This program provides a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge those physicians who contribute in small, often unsung ways to your individual success. These individuals may have steered you into the specialty you love, helped you find a work/life balance, guided you through your professional society or unknowingly served as a role model for you or others.

The AMA House of Delegates (HOD) convened November 11-13 in Honolulu for its 2007 Interim Meeting.   Several policy items were considered by the House and a variety of timely educational sessions were conducted. Please note that the WPC Disposition of Actions is a preliminary report of actions taken by the House of Delegates at its 2007 Interim Meeting and should not be considered final. 

AMA-WPC Physician Mentor Recognition Program presentation
Thanks to all of you who participated in our first annual AMA-WPC Physician Mentor Recognition Program which honored those physicians who have made a difference in the profession of medicine.  As part of this program nominees were highlighted in various venues including being honored in a special display at the AMA-WPC gala reception at the 2007 Interim Meeting of the AMA House of Delegates on Nov. 9 in Honolulu.  

AMNews: Gender discrimination still an issue for women doctors
A recent American Medical News (AMNews) article examines a gender discrimination case and ruling by The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). Issues surrounding gender discrimination in the work place for women physicians and why it is often hard to quantify gender discrimination in physicians’ practices are further explored in the article.

A  American Medical News (AMNews) article examines the growing need for refresher course for physicians who have left medicine and would like to return and several refreshers courses that have started up as a result of this need. 

JAMA: low amounts of physical activity and fitness levels among sedentary, overweight postmenopausal women

According to a study in the May 16 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), even small amounts of physical activity, approximately 75 minutes a week, can help improve the fitness levels for postmenopausal women who are sedentary and overweight or obese. Go to  to read more.

KFF releases women’s health insurance fact sheets
The Kaiser Family Foundation has released new fact sheets that provide state and national data on women’s health insurance coverage.  Among the highlights: approximately two-thirds of women and men have job-based coverage, however, women are less likely than men to be insured through their own job and more likely to have dependent coverage. Find out what the AMA is doing to expand coverage for the uninsured and increasing access to care .

AMNews: Using an agent for contract negotiation
An article in American Medical News (AMNews) explores how a small but growing number of physicians are using agents to handle job hunting and contract negotiations.

JAMA online career resource for physicians
JAMA CareerNet provides users with recruitment listings, as well as information on medical training, location and licensure, and articles on career development and personal finance. Access to content is free and registration is not required to search job listings.
