To the Editor:
The American Medical Association has been working for more than a decade to expand health insurance coverage to the millions of Americans who are currently uninsured, No perfect fit (3/20).
The AMA has a three-part proposal that expands coverage and choice through tax credits that would provide the most money to those who need it most: lower-income Americans. Under our plan, patients who do not earn enough to pay income tax would still receive payment vouchers for the purchase of health insurance.
We want to make it easier for individuals to afford and own their insurance, and improve insurance options so patients can choose the health plan thats best for their individual needs. Our proposal establishes fair health insurance rules that include protections for high-risk patients and greater individual responsibility.
With one of the highest uninsured populations in the U.S., Texas is no stranger to the tragedies faced daily by uninsured patients. The 5.5 million uninsured Texans, and the tens of millions more living across the U.S., live sicker and die younger and they deserve better than the status quo. The AMAs Voice For The Uninsured Campaign was launched with hope that more Americans will join us in our effort toward a national solution.
