Antitrust reform

Antitrust relief is a top priority of the AMA. Most physicians in the United States have little or no bargaining power with health insurers. Health insurers present physicians with contracts on a take-it-or-leave-it basis, and these contracts include provisions that have serious implications for patient care.

In addition to our advocacy efforts with legislators and regulators, the AMA also works to educate physicians about the realities of the current antitrust environment. The "Publications/resources" link below will take you to recently developed educational documents for physicians.

Federal legislative activities

Bipartisan legislation would put decision-making in the hands of patients and physicians rather than large health plans.
