program

The AMA’s peer-based Succeeding in Medical School (SIMS) program sends an AMA student leader to selected schools to provide first- and second-year medical students with an overview of the AMA.  Following the overview , a panel discussion led by third- and fourth-year medical students from your school will focus on local/chapter involvement opportunities, career tips and how to manage life during medical school.  The AMA will provide your SIMS event with:

  • Lunch—all expense paid
  • AMA student leader
  • Event promotion and planning guidance

Last year over 6,400 students attended a SIMS event last year and had plenty of positive feedback:

  • “I think it’s great that the AMA does this for chapters – do these events more often!”
  • “I thought the speaker was very good – he talked about issues we care about.”
  • “I thought that this presentation was very helpful, especially the AMA part, I wasn’t aware of all they do, before this presentation.”

To get started:
If your school was selected, you will have received an e-mail stating so.  You will need to complete the form you received in the email and send to student.membership@ama-assn.orgWhen choosing your SIMS event date, choose a date as close to your orientation club fairs as possible.  Events must occur prior to Sept. 26, 2008.

Even if your school was not selected to host an AMA student leader this year, you can still benefit from the SIMS program when you contact your MSSOP representative to plan a “do-it-yourself” SIMS event!  You will receive funding for do-it-yourself events so that you can organize an event at your chapter.  To request a “do-it-yourself” event, please submit a chapter involvement grant using the form on www.ama-assn.org/go/cig and name the title of your event “do-it-yourself SIMS event.”

Please contact student.membership@ama-assn.org for more information
